Does a Driveway Alert Need Wi-Fi? Understanding Local and Phone Alerts
The outdoor sensor, indoor hub, and optional phone notifications have different connection needs. Here is how they fit together.
“Does it need Wi-Fi?” can mean two different things: Wi-Fi at the outdoor detection point, or internet access for an alert on your phone. Keeping those separate makes it easier to choose a system for a long driveway or a remote entrance.
Local alerts at the hub
Reporter Ai's outdoor sensor detects motion, captures a still image, and classifies the target as a person, vehicle, or animal. It sends the alert to the indoor hub over its local wireless link. The sensor does not need Wi-Fi at the driveway or gate. The hub can provide local visual and audible alerts without internet access. Explore the system.
This matters when router coverage ends well before the place you want to watch. You can plan the detection point around the property instead of around the Wi-Fi signal. Wireless range still depends on the installation conditions, so check the published specifications and test the location.
Optional alerts on your phone
Phone notifications are a separate option. For Reporter App Alerts, the indoor hub needs to connect to your Wi-Fi router and internet. The outdoor sensor still does not need Wi-Fi. The setup guide describes how to enable App Alerts on the hub and register it with the app.
If you only need to know when someone arrives while you are at the property, local hub alerts may be enough. If you also want an image on your phone when you are away, set up the optional app alerts and make sure the hub can reach the router.
What the image adds
A basic motion chime tells you that something moved. Reporter Ai adds a still image and a target category so you can see whether the alert concerns a person, vehicle, or animal. It does not identify individual people or provide a continuous video stream. Those distinctions are useful when deciding what kind of alert system fits your needs. Read about image-based alerts.
Before mounting a sensor, pair and test it with the hub indoors. Then test both local and, if enabled, phone alerts from the intended outdoor location. The distinction is simple: local alerts use the sensor-to-hub link; phone alerts add the hub's Wi-Fi and internet connection.
